Angels 3-1 Reddich Borough
Warwick Angels Match Report 03.03.12.

Today’s home match was against Redditch Borough. This is the team that very early on in the season took us out of the cup. When we last played them we had a 2 – 2 draw against them. They are currently two places below us in the league.
In the first minute Redditch broke free to have a good shot at our goal, which Zara did well to save. A couple of minutes later Molly picked up the ball, and took it all the way down the wing to produce a great cross to see Beth, then Charlotte, then Rhyan all miss their shots at goal. From then on in the play went backwards and forwards up and down the pitch, but most of the Angels were playing below par, and even Jess, who usually is so solid, made several errors, as did pretty well all the rest of the team, kicking the ball into touch when they had time and space to get the ball up the pitch, and when they did try and pass the ball up the pitch, their passes were generally poor. At about 13 minutes in Redditch hit our goal post. Towards the end of this half Charlotte, and Chloe made several great clearances off our goal line, and Aley produced a fantastic sliding tackle to prevent an almost certain goal. Then as this half was coming to an end Redditch broke through, and despite a good effort by our defence, and Zara in goal they scored to take the half time score to Angels 0, Redditch 1.
In the second half the Angels were a different team, but even so at about 2 minutes in Ellie had to produce a great clearance, then a minute later Jess, Tyler, and Charlotte got the ball to Zoe, who popped the ball home. After the kick off the Angels got the ball up the pitch again to see them hit the underside of the Redditch bar, and the ball definitely bounced over the line, but without video evidence in place no goal. From the goal kick Jess got the ball to score a cracking goal some 6 minutes into this half. This was followed by some great play by the Angels with Tyler, and Jess combining well to give Jess a good crack at goal, and then we gained a corner, which Jess took to see Chloe just miss a header. We then had another corner, which Jess took to see both Beth, and Chloe go for the ball, but it was Chloe who got a toe to it to slot it home. Then at about 19 minutes in Redditch came close. For a short while Redditch put the Angels under pressure, Despite this the second half belonged to the Angels, with Georgie (Wilko) playing a great game, and coming very close to scoring, then her and Tyler cleared the ball off our goal line. Wilko then made a great pass to Jess to see her have a cracking shot at goal. Then Tyler produced a great flick on ball to Molly, who came so very close to scoring. Jo also produced some neat football with a neat back heel to Wilko, and Millsey was so very solid in defence. Our only real scare in this half was when Redditch cracked a really long high ball towards our goal, but Zara did well to control this. The less said about the first half the better, but in the second half the Angels were on fire, and deserved the final 3 – 1 victory.

Angels of the Match – Wilko, and Ellie.

Gornal Girls East 2-4 Angels
Warwick Angels Match Report 25.02.12.

Today’s away match was against Gornal Girls East. Gornal are seventh in the league table relative to our fourth place. This was our first match against Gornal, the previous scheduled match was postponed due to bad weather.
The Angels started off well putting Gornal under pressure, and in the first 2 minutes Charlotte slotted the ball to Jess, who lobbed the ball to just miss a goal. Then some 4 in minutes Jess produced a great ball to set up Tyler, only to see this great chance wasted. At about 10 minutes in Jess once more put up a great long cross diagonally across the pitch to Rhyan, only to see this come to nothing. Gornal then had a brief run of play, but Molly, and Aley shut down any attempt to get near our goal area. From this the Angels produced some really good inter passing to see Rhyan have a great shot at goal. Once more Gornal put the Angels under a bit of pressure, but again this was soon shut down, and some 20 minutes in Chloe broke free to have a cracking shot at goal. Then at about 22 minutes in Gornal broke free to score a weak goal, completely against the run of play. Then shortly after this Tyler had a free shot at goal, but it totally lacked power, and the Gornal goalie had no problem to stop it. The Angels then really put the pressure on with Rhyan making a neat pass to set up Zoe, who had a good try at goal. This was followed by Tyler making a great pass to Jess, who took a good powerful shot, but it went straight into the arms of the Gornal goalie. The Angels finished this half really strongly, but they could just not put the ball away, leaving the half time score at Gornal 1, Angels 0.
In the second half the Angels started where they left off to see Jess make a great pass to Molly, who slammed the ball home. Then once more Gornal came so very close to scoring, because of our failure to get the ball away from our goalmouth. This situation was eventually rescued by Charlotte booting the ball up the field. At about 10 minutes in we gained a free kick, which Jess took, but the ball went just wide of goal, and was too high for anyone to head home. A minute later Beth did some outstanding play to pass to Molly, but she seemed to be on the wrong foot to put the ball away. Then again Aley, Chloe, and the rest of the defence squad did some great work to close down a Gornal attack. At about 16 minutes into this second half Molly slotted a neat ball to Beth, who did really well to calmly lob the ball over the head of the Gornal goalie. Then at about 19 minutes in Molly received a neat pass, and she stayed calm as the Gornal goalie rushed her, to crack home a truly great goal. The Gornal girls continued to press, and at about 26 minutes in they really tested Zara with a great shot, which she just pushed over the bar. The Angels soon put the pressure back on to see Jess slot the ball to Ellie, who in turn made a brilliant cross to Molly, who just missed the goal area. Yet again Gornal came back at us to see Chloe clear the ball off our goal line. From this scare the Angels worked the ball back up the pitch to see Beth produce some truly great determined play to get the ball, and make a super pass to Molly, who slammed the ball home. In the dying minutes Gornal produced some equally good play to score a great goal. The final score was Gornal 2, Angels 4.

Perrywood United 2-2 Angels
Warwick Angels Match Report 21.01.12.

Today’s match was away to Perrywood United Girls. They are currently second from bottom of the league, and when we played them last in November 2011 we beat them 3 – 0.

The pitch today was heavily waterlogged, and the goalmouth at one end was extremely muddy, making for it heavy going for both sides.

The Angels started off well with much of the play for the first nine minutes in the Perrywood half. Jess had a good crack at goal in the first two minutes, and Charlotte after 8 minutes. Perrywood did come back at us briefly to see Molly do some great tackling and defensive work, with Aley playing her part in defence. The Angels then strung a whole series of passes together finishing up with a neat Charlotte pass to Ella, who came so very close. Then at around 18 minutes in Perrywoods broke free to have one of their players versus our goalkeeper on a one to one, and she cracked the ball past Zara to score a great goal. This was totally against the run of play, but as I said a great goal. Once more the Angels put the pressure back on to see several of our players have a goal scoring chance, but no-one could put the ball away thanks to some good goalkeeping by the Perywood goalie, who handled our couple of corners well. Then right at the end of this first half the ball fell to Molly who slammed home a smashing goal from about 20 yards out to put the half time score at Perrywood 1, Angels 1.

In the second half the Angels came out with some strong play with Ellie coming close, then Jess, but unusually her shot lacked power. Then Tyler having two great chances, one of which was a one to one with the Perrywoods goalie, but in the end she put the ball just wide. At about 14 minutes in Zoe, Charlotte, and Jess combined well to see Jess slot the ball home. This was followed a minute later with Jess just missing out on a lob to beat the Perrywood goalie, but the ball went just wide. The Angels continued to put together some neat interplay between Molly, Zoe, Tyler, and Jess, but time after time the Angels just could not put the ball away. Perrywood then had a good spell to see Charlotte, and Molly produce two brilliant tackles to prevent Perrywoods from almost certain goal scoring chances. At about 25 minutes into this half Perrywoods crowded our goal, and in the deep mud and mêlée around our goal they managed to beat our goalie to put the score at Perrywood 2, Angels 2.

With 15 minutes of the game left I put Angels Beth, and Rhyan back on the pitch after a spell on the bench, they produced some of the best football of the game, but despite some great play the winning goal eluded the Angels to see the final score remain at Perrywood 2, Angels 2. A disappointing final result, because for most of the game the Angels were the better side.

Angel of the Match – Charlotte.

Warwick Angels Match Report 07.01.12.

Today in our first match of the New Year we played Coundon Court at our home ground. Coundon have had a good season so far to see them at number 2 in the league, with Leafield in the number one spot. The Angels have beaten Leafield in our very first match, but the league counted this has a postponed match, because at that time the Angels had not signed up to play in the premier league.
I think that many of the supporters from both sides were looking forward to this match after the Christmas break, and several postponed matches leading up to Christmas. In talking to several Angel’s supporters, and Coundon supporters after the match it seems the general view was that both sides did not produce the exciting football we know that the girls are capable of. This is not to say that there was not some good creative play, but these incidents were not sustained, and the match was largely lacklustre.
In the first half Coundon came out with some strong play at the beginning of the match, then 4 minutes in Charlotte neatly slotted the ball to Ella to see her come very close to scoring. Then at 8 minutes in Jess made a long pass down the wing to Beth, who did really well to force a corner, but this came to nothing, A couple of minutes later Beth managed to get toe to the ball, but the shot went straight into the hands of the Coundon goalie. From then on in both sides had their chances with the play moving from one of the pitch to the other. At about 22 minutes in Coundon pushed up the field to create a skirmish in front of our goal, and somehow from this melee the ball literally trickled over our goal line.
As we approached the end of the first half Coundon put us under more pressure, and Zara did well to just boot the ball clear, followed a couple of minutes later with Molly producing a truly fine clearance.
In the second half the match was much the same as the first half. Jess in the 7th minute producing a tremendous long diagonal ball to Tyler, but she could not break through. Coundon then came back at us in the 10th minute to see both Ali, and Aley in defence putting a stop to the Coundon attack. In the 15th minute Wilko popped the ball to Ellie to see her have a great crack at the Coundon goal. About 18 minutes into this half Tyler produced a fine cross forcing Coundon to give away a corner, but this came to nothing. Once more play went from end to end, and then in the 28th minute Charlotte produced a really neat ball to Ellie, but the attack just petered out. As we approached the end of the match Coundon put us more pressure to come so very close, and then Coundon produced the best shot of the match to score. This left the final score at Angels 0, Coundon 2.
So, as I said the Angels did produce some good play, but somehow the match lacked real drive. My congratulations to Coundon on this win, and I would just add my thanks to the Coundon supporters for their good spirits.
Dean.

Angels 1-2 Wolves Girls

Today’s home match was against Wolves Girls, currently mid table in the league, but they have beaten some strong teams, including Coundon Court Red, and they are well on their way to the cup final.
Wolves started off well putting the Angels under pressure from the off, and for the first 4 / 5 minutes of the game. Then the Angels started to bolt together some neat passing to get the ball to Ella, who put in a great cross to Beth, but Beth just could not get a shot away. Then Wolves came back at us again, and this was to be the way of the whole match, with both sides playing good attacking football. At about 8 minutes in Charlotte slipped the ball to Tyler to see her put in a great pass to Jess, Wolves tried to block this cross, but they fluffed it to give Jess a clean shot at goal, which the Wolves goalie could not stop. Angels 1, Wolves 0. Shortly after this at about 11 minutes in Beth made a great attempt to lob the ball over the Wolves goalie, which she did, but it was just cleared off their line. Then at 13 minutes in Zara took a goal kick, and whilst she was off her line Wolves lobbed the ball over her head. Angels 1, Wolves 1. Wolves put more pressure on us to gain a corner, which they wasted the chance, then Chloe made a great defensive block, followed at about 23 minutes in with a fantastic sliding tackle by Molly to stop a Wolves Attack. At 28 minutes in Wolves had a cracking shot at our goal to see Zara get a hand to the ball, to give away a corner. The Angels then put the pressure back on Wolves to see Charlotte put in a good clean pass to Tyler, only to see her great shot hit the crossbar. The match was very much from end to end with Wolves gaining a corner at about 38 minutes in, followed shortly after by an Angel’s corner. At the end of this great half, which could have seen both sides score, the result was Angels 1, Wolves 1.
The second half produced more of the same, with both sides putting equal pressure on. Aley, Chloe, Ali, and Molly did some great work in defence, and Charlotte blocked ball after ball in midfield. At about 16 minutes in Jess and Tyler did some slick inter passing, to see Tyler have a good crack at goal. Charlotte followed this at about 23 minutes in with a great on target high shot at goal, which the Wolves keeper did well to save. The Angels then gained a corner, which Jess put the ball behind the Wolves goal, much to her disgust. At about 26 minutes in Chloe, Jess, and Beth did some slick passing to give Beth a crack at goal, but it came to nothing. Then at about 28 minutes in Rhyan, Beth, and Charlotte produced some brilliant interplay to give Charlotte a real on target shot at goal, only to see the Wolves goalie produce an equally brilliant save. Following this Ellie was brought down by the Wolves goalie to give us a free kick, which Jess took to see the ball skim over the net. Following the whole pattern of this great match, Wolves put the pressure on us to create a goalmouth scramble by our goal, and from this mêlée the ball just trickled past Zara. Angels 1, Wolves 2. After this the Angels really put the pressure with Jess having a great shot finger tipped over the bar, and a Jess pass to Beth, who’s header came so very close. But it was not to be, because the final score was Angels 1, Wolves 2. A truly great game, but a draw would have been a fair result.

Angel of the Match – Tyler.

Warwick Angels Match Report 26.11.11. Redditch Borough 2-2 Angels

Today’s away match was against Redditch Borough. They are currently third from bottom but at the end of the season i would expect them to be at the top end off the league, but we have to remember this is the team that took us out of the Cup.
Right from kick off Redditch put the Angels under pressure, and came close to scoring within 30 seconds. The Angels soon re-grouped to return the pressure to see Jess, at about 9 minutes in, put in a really good cross to Tyler who came so very close to scoring. The tone of this match was already set, because play was very much to, and fro from one end to the other. Zara made a good shout to claim the ball from a Redditch attack, and then Charlotte made a great run from nowhere to shut down another Redditch break. This was followed by some really neat, and slick passing by the Angels with Charlotte starting the move with a neat pass to Rhyan, then from Rhyan to Tyler, who popped the ball to Beth, but she could not get a clean shot away. The Angels positional play and passing was exceptional, as was Molly’s, Millsey’s, and Chloe’s defensive play. We then gained a corner, which Jess took, for Molly to produce a cracking header, which just bounced off the top of the Redditch goal-bar. Then Charlotte took the ball all the way down the wing from way back down the pitch to put in a great cross, but the Angels were not able to capitalise on this. Again Redditch came at us to see Millsey produce in a great clearance. Then Zara made another great shout, and dropped on the ball to stop Redditch from progressing. This was followed by a Redditch corner, which the Angels promptly shut down. At 35 minutes in Charlotte slotted a neat pass to Jess, who produced one of her long powerful shots straight into the Redditch goal. In the dying minutes of this first half Tyler, Charlotte, Rhyan all bolted together great balls to set up Wilko, who managed to force a corner, but it came to nothing. So, at the end of the first half the score was Redditch 0, Angels 1.

At the start of the second half Charlotte, and Jess worked some neat combination passing, as did the whole team, but at 12 minutes into this half Redditch gained a corner to score a neat goal, taking the score to 1 – 1. This was followed, by more to, and fro play to see Redditch gain a second corner at 17 minutes in. As the ball came out from this, Redditch put in a great high shot to score to lead 2 –1. Three long punts followed this from Jess, all of which went well over the Redditch bar. Then at 21 minutes in Charlotte made a neat pass to Haley, who produced a cracking shot, followed by an equally cracking save from the Redditch goalie. At 34 minutes in Charlotte slotted the ball to Jess to see her score a fine goal, taking the score to 2 – 2. In the last few minutes, and extra time of this second half Redditch really put the pressure on to see Charlotte make a great clearance. Then in the dying seconds of the match Redditch struck a long high lob, which was a heart stopping moment for both sides, because the ball seemed to hang in the air – just like a slow motion film, only to see it go just over our bar, to leave the final score at 2 – 2. A truly entertaining match, made all the better by sporting encouragement by both sets of supporters for each other’s players.

Angels of the Match – The Whole Team.

Warwick Angels Match Report – 12.11.11. Angels 3-0 Perrywood United

Today’s home match was against Perrywoods United. I think much to everyone’s surprise Perrywoods – second from the bottom of the league, took the probable favourites – Coundon Court Red out of the Cup with a 4 – 2 win. This surprise was emphasised by the fact that Coundon Court Red beat Perrywoods 5 – 0 only a short time previously. This has all the makings of a good, and tough match for the Angels.
The Angels got off to a cracking start from kick off, with some neat, and accurate passing to set up Rhyan with the first goal of the match in the first minute. Perrywoods then came back at us briefly, but Molly, Aley, and Ella proved to be on top of the situation. Some 5 minutes in Perrywoods pushed forward again, but once more Molly produced a great clearance, which reached Beth at the other end of the pitch. Beth did well to force a corner, which Jess took to see Charlotte rush in from about 30 yards out, and she so very nearly put the ball away. Tyler and Rhyan really worked the ball well between them, and in fact the whole team from defence, to midfield, and the forwards were reading the game so well to produce some deadly accurate passing. This is not to say that Perrywoods were lame ducks, because they too had their moments, but it seemed like I had six, or more Charlotte’s on the pitch, because nearly every time Perrywoods started a move, Charlotte was there to break it up. Mind you Charlotte was not alone in this tactic, because all of the Angels were reading the game to close down any of Perrywoods attempts to build up a break. Having said that at 17 minutes in Perrywoods did come close. At 20 minutes in Tyler and Ella combined well to give Ella a shot, this was followed by Charlotte and Beth doing some slick passing to set up Rhyan, but her shot went just wide. The Angels continued to produce some attractive play, and at 25 minutes in Tyler produced what could have been a great cross, but she fortunately miss-hit the cross to give a cracking goal from the curving ball straight over the goalies head into the net. In the last few minutes of this half Charlotte chased the ball to rescue it from going over the sideline, to put in a brilliant cross, which Beth so very nearly headed home. As the seconds ticked by Jess had a shot, and Charlotte and Tyler produced a chance, but as the whistle went the half time score was Angels 2, Perrywoods 0.
Right from the off in the second half the Angels were back, firing on all cylinders to set up Ellie. She was on a one to one situation with the Perrywoods goalie, as the goalie came out to shut her down, Ellie very neatly lobbed the ball over her head. This was in the first minute. For the rest of the match the Angels were the better side with some great play from all the Angels, with Molly, Tyler, Charlotte, and Jess all having shots at goal, and Chloe, Zoe, Millsey, Ali, Jo, and Wilko all making a good contribution, and in fact Wilko came very close to scoring. As I mentioned before Perrywoods were no lame ducks leaving Aley to make a great clearance from our line at some 23 minutes in, and then 25 minutes in Zara had to make a diving save. A great and entertaining match, and, of course it takes two teams to make such a match, so my thanks to Perrywoods for their part.
Dean.
Angel of the Match Charlotte.

Warwick Angels Match Report – 05.11.11. Solihull Borough 2-5 Angels

Today we were away to bottom of the league Solihull Borough. This was a return match, because we last played them on the 15th October 2011, winning 3 – 0. The Angels got off to a good solid start with some accurate skilful play. With both Rhyan and Beth coming close within the first few minutes. Then at about 12 minutes in Jess had a long shot at goal, but Solihull goalie was well on top of the shot. At 14 minutes in Charlotte produced a slick pass to Rhyan, but she missed the chance. This was followed almost immediately with a great cross from Tyler, and this time Rhyan was there, admittedly with her knee, to score a brilliant goal. The Angels were producing the better football, and they did some really neat passing from a corner to give Charlotte a crack at goal, but her powerful shot went just wide. At about 24 minutes in Solihull had a shot at our goal, and Molly produced a great clearance, which put the Angels back on the attack. Zoe and Ellie then did some really neat passing, but it came to nothing. Then at around 30 minutes in Jess was chasing a Solihull player, but before Jess got there this player dived, and much to the surprise of the Angels supporters Solihull were awarded a free kick, but justice was done, because Solihull wasted their chance. Then at about 32 minutes in Molly had a great shot. The ball came back out to Tyler on the wing, and she put the ball back in to Molly, who really struck the ball. The Solihull goalie did not manage to hold the ball, and from the rebound Molly was there again to crack the ball home. In the dying minutes of this first half Zoe and Jess combined well for Jess to come close. At the end of this half the score was Solihull 0, Angels 2.

In the second half the Angels were back in there putting the pressure on. From the start of this half Jess and Molly combined really well with Jess taking several long shots at goal, and then Charlotte slipped a neat pass to Molly for her to shoot. Solihull then broke free to have a shot at our goal. A great corner followed this from Charlotte to Aley, but she just missed. Then at 17 minutes in Solihull broke free again to have a long shot at our goal, only to see this easy shot bounce over our goalies head. A few minutes later Solihull had another easy weak shot at our goal, only to see it roll in to make the score Solihull 2, Angels 2. This state of affairs was short lived, because at about 24 minutes in Charlotte got the ball, and struck a really powerful shot at about head height to the Solihull goalie, which in fairness she did get her hands to, but the shot was so strong that she could not hold it, and the ball dropped neatly into the bottom left hand corner of the net. After this the Angels had several chances with Ella coming close, then Jess from a really good throw in from Rhyan, and some well worked passing. Solihull did have one more shot at our goal, but at about 30 minutes in Tyler put in a great pass to Jess to see her strike the ball home. Then in the dying minutes of the game Jess slotted a neat ball to Rhyan, who produced a great goal. At the end of the match to final score was Solihull 2, Angels 5. Every one of the Angels spent time on the pitch to contribute to this win. Thanks to Solihull for a great, and entertaining game..

Warwick Angels Match Report 15.10.11. Angels 3-0 Solihull Borough

Today’s home match was against Solihull Borough Girls. On paper we should have a good chance of a win today, because as at the start of this match, Solihull are 9th in the league, having played 5, and lost 4, and Drawn 1, whereas the Angels have played 4, and lost 1, putting them at 4th in the league, and Netherton who we beat last week, won against Solihull 5 – 3.

The Angels got off to a good start, in the first minute when Charlotte did a neat, pass to Rhyan, but her shot lacked power, a couple of minutes later the Solihull defence made a mistake, and Rhyan came very close. This was followed by Jess, and Ella doing some slick one, two passing to give Jess a shot at goal. Then Solihull made a break, and they had a shot at our goal, but the Angels were the better side. Both Beth and Charlotte then had a shot at goal, but the ball was just not going into the net. Around 13 minutes in we gained our third corner, and Chloe put in a great ball, but no one managed to shoot. However, a minute later the ball was popped up for Beth to head home a neat goal. Then Chloe and Ella did some great inter passing, but they left themselves nowhere to go. At 21 minutes in Tyler attempted a cross, which almost went in the goal, then a few minutes later Charlotte had a shot, but the Solihull goalie stopped it. Then Molly had a great solo run following this, but she could not get the shot away. Molly then tried a lob from the halfway line, and then Jess had a punt. At 38 minutes Solihull had a great shot at our goal, having put the pressure on in the last few minutes. Then just before half time Wilko, who has really come on as a player, had a shot at goal, to leave the half time score at Angels 1, Solihull 0.

In the second half the Angels were on top of the game with a couple of good attempts from Jess, then one from Molly. At 10 minutes in Zoe, and Charlotte produced some great inter-passing to set up a shot for Molly. Then a few minutes later Charlotte had a shot. At 17 minutes in Solihull broke through, but Charlotte did a great defence tackle to put a stop to this. And so the game went on with Aley, Charlotte, Jess, then Charlotte again twice, with a second great ball from Tyler all having a shot at goal. From then on in the Angels produced some brilliant football leading to shots from Charlotte at 25 minutes in, then one from Beth at 30 minutes in, then one from Jess at 33 minutes in. In this half we had numerous shots at goal, but it seemed like we were destined not to score, but then Jess put in a really strong cross to Rhyan, who got a toe to the ball to score a classic goal right into the top corner of the Solihull net. This was followed a few minutes later with some great play between Jess, and Tyler to pop the ball up for Beth to score her second header. As we approached the end of the game Rhyan, and Ella did some great combination play, but in the end it came to nothing. At full time the score was Angels 3, Solihull 0. All credit to Solihull who battled time and time again, but in truth the Angels could easily have won this match by many more goals, but it seemed like we were destined not to get the ball into the net from so many shots. Nevertheless, a great game, and all credit to Solihull for holding us back until the 35th minute for us to score our second goal.

Warwick Angels Match Report 08.10.11. Netherton Colts 1-2 Angels

Today’s game was an away game against Netherton Colts. At the start of the match Netherton were second in the league, having played 5 games this season, whereas the Angels were 5th in the league, having played only three games.
I decided to make some minor changes to the team structure, putting Charlotte up front, with an instruction to use her speed to drop back to midfield when necessary. The Angels started off well, putting the pressure on from the kick off. 5 minutes in Charlotte put in a great cross, but no one was able to finish it off, then Netherton came back at us leaving Chloe to make a really good clearance, but Netherton kept up the pressure, and they lobbed the ball over Molly’s head to create an open shot at our goal some 8 minutes in, which breezed past Zara. Ella, and Charlotte produced some neat passing to put the pressure back on Netherton, but they came back at us leaving Molly, Millsey, Chloe, and Aley with lots of work to do, and in the end Netherton broke through to shoot at our goal, but Zara managed to hold the ball. Then at some 14 minutes in Ella produced a neat pass to Jess, who put away a great goal. Both Rhyan, and Charlotte did some good work to gain a corner, but then once more Netherton came back at us, and came close to scoring. From then on in the Angels raised their game, and most of the play was in the Netherton half, with Jess coming close from a long shot some 18 minutes in. At about 23 minutes in Ella hit the Netherton goal post with a sizzling shot, then Beth got the ball to Charlotte, but surprisingly she only produced a weak shot at goal, then Ellie, Charlotte, and Ella combined well for Charlotte to have a crack at goal some 32 minutes in, but she hit the post. Tyler then broke free, and had an open goal chance, but she was charged off the ball. Charlotte followed this with a great shot, but the Netherton goalie did really well to stop a goal. This left the half time score at Netherton 1, Angels 1.
In the second half the Angels were on top, and at 4 minutes in, Aley had a crack at goal, which their goalie stopped, and Ali shot just wide off the re-bound. Then Charlotte went just wide. Then Ellie slotted the ball to Jess, who produced a Jess classic with a great long lob over the Netherton goalies head, having spotted her way off her goal line. At 19 minutes in Jess almost repeated the same shot. Netherton then came back at us for a short while, but Aley, Millsey, and Chloe did some great defending, leaving Molly to produce a great clearance. Beth then came so, so close, but once more Netherton broke through, leaving Aley to do a superb tackle to clear the ball some 29 minutes into this second half. Beth then came close with a header. At this stage of the game the Angels were on fire with Millsey, Aley, Molly, and Chloe doing a brilliant job in defence, and the rest of the team producing some really slick, and accurate passing, and in the dying minutes of the game Tyler had another great chance, but she put the ball wide. We probably should have had at least another couple of goals, but I have to say the Angels produced some of their best football yet this season. A great, and entertaining game, and apart from a bit of back shoving – not always picked up by the referee, Netherton made this a really good game.

It’s hard to believe, but here we go with our first cup match in round one of the open cup in the under 15’s premier league. Our opponents this week in a home match are Redditch Borough. Being so early in the season we have little history, except that they are 8th in the league table, but they did beat Gornal 4 – 3 in a recent match, and we just scraped home with 3 – 2 win against Gornal last weekend. So once more we will need to be on our toes if we want to progress to round two of the open cup.
Redditch came at us from the start to gain a corner in the first 2 minutes. Charlotte cleared this, but only back to the sideline, and then Redditch hit the side netting. A minute later Redditch put the pressure on again, and this time Charlotte produced an ace clearance from just in front of our goal. A couple of minute’s later Redditch had a crack at our goal. About 8 minutes in Tyler and Ella combined to shoot, but the shot had no power behind it. 13 minutes in Tyler had a shot, but again there was no power behind it. Some 16 minutes in the Angels gained a free kick, because the Redditch girl handled the ball. From where I was standing this should have been a penalty, because the Redditch girl was in the box, but it was not to be, and Jess went just wide of the Redditch goal. The Angels were now on top of what had been a very even game, with Jess having a couple of punts. At 30 minutes Molly cleared the ball, and then almost immediately after Zara did well to stop a shot at our goal, then at 32 minutes Charlotte put in a brilliant cross to Rhyan, but she took too long on the ball, and was shut down. In the 36th minute Zara just stopped a Redditch shot that came awkwardly off the post In the dying minutes Charlotte had a cracking shot, but it went just wide, then Jess tried a long shot, but at the end of the first half the score was Angels 0, Redditch 0.
The second half was more of the same, with Tyler having a weak shot at the Redditch goal within the first 2 minutes, but this was followed by a cracking long lob from Jess, who had spotted the Redditch goalie off her line, and the ball soared over her head into the Redditch goal. Then Ella came close, but the Redditch goalie stopped it. Redditch then came back at us to score 2 easy goals in the 6th minute, and 10th minute. At this stage I put Charlotte up front, and almost immediately she came so very close, but then at 15 minutes in Jess passed the ball to Charlotte on the wing, and she just took a really powerful curving shot right into the top of the Redditch goal – an absolute cracking goal. The game then went to and fro with the Angels coming close some 35 minutes in from a goalmouth scramble in the Redditch goal, then in the 40th minute Ella had a good try, but here no power behind the shot. This left the full time score at Angels 2, Redditch 2. So in this close match we went into extra time. Jess was injured, and had to come off some 3 minutes into the first half of extra time, and at the end of this first half of extra time the score was still a draw. In the second half of extra time things were still very even, but Redditch then scored to put us out of the cup.But even though we are out of the cup I have to say it was a cracking match, and the Angels played really well. We wish Redditch good luck in future cup matches.

Angels 3 v 2 Gornal Girls East
Warwick Angels Match Report 24.09.11.

Today’s home match was against Gornal Girls East. Gornal are currently 2nd in the league having played 3, won 2 – beating Wolves and Solihull, and lost 1 to Redditch. Pretty well every match this season will be a challenge. Gornal have had team shortages from the off this season, and with one player out with a broken ankle they were down to 10 players today.
For the first few minutes of the match both sides were feeling each other out, and play was very much to and fro from one end to the other. The Angels were the first to pick up their game, and Ella at 7 minutes in came so very close, just putting the ball over the Gornal bar. The Angels continued to pressure with some good passing by Chloe, and Charlotte and Ella. Some 15 minutes in Charlotte and Jess worked a short corner, and Charlotte had a crack from way out. Then 20 minutes in Gornal had a rare shot at our goal. The Angels then gained a throw in, which went to the centre of the field. Jess picked this up to produce a Jess special, with a great long shot from way out to score in the 21st minute. Gornal then gained a free kick, which came close, but Zara safely took the ball. Then at 28 minutes in Gornal put the pressure on, only to see them score an easy goal, due to some poor defence on our part. Having said that Molly was stretched today, with both Millsey (out with an injured arm), and Aley having commitments with a Duke of Edinburgh Award. At 32 minutes in Molly came so very close with a header from a Jess ball in. In the dying minutes of the first half Gornal really put the pressure on coming very close at 39 minutes, and 41 minutes to leave the half time score at 1 – 1.
In the second half Gornal put the pressure on from the off, and 11 minutes in they scored a great goal from near the sideline, and about 30 yards out. Not long after this Jess took a corner, which was an in swinger. Many of the spectators thought it had gone over the goal line, but the end result was only a goal kick for Gornal. The Angels play then seemed to go a bit ragged for a while, with several Angels just not bothering to keep the ball in play when they could have done. Charlotte, and Ella seemed to be the only two players shouting for the ball, and Charlotte was totally free on three occasions, but was not passed to. Charlotte and Ella did combine really well, and this pair; have the makings of a good combination. On one occasion some 20 minutes in this lead to a cracking shot from Ella, only to see the ball hit the side netting. 31 minutes in Jess, seeing the goalie off her line tried a great long lob, and had it not been for an awkward bounce it would have gone in. The Angels then gained a free kick, and Jess put this in from way out. As we approached the end of the second half, Jess put the ball to Ella, who popped up a neat shot, and the bounce took the ball over the head of the Gornal goalie to leave the final score at Angels 3, Gornal 2. In this second half I brought on both Wilko, and Zoe. Wilko was like a little tiger harassing several Gornal players to great effect, and Zoe produced some great play on the wing, getting in several excellent crosses. A win for the Angels; but a slightly below par performance.

Warwick Angels Match Report 17.09.11. Coundon Court 3 v 1 Angels

Today’s away match against Coundon Court Red on paper looks like it will be the Angels biggest test this season. I know it’s very early days yet, but Coundon and Wolves are already shaping up to be the teams we have to beat, and Coundon beat Wolves 4 – 3 last weekend after coming back from 3 – 0 down at half time to put Coundon top of the league. So today’s game will be a real challenge for my young team.

The Angels got off to a great start with some superb passing, and ball play. Most of the play was in the Coundon half, and I think Coundon were a bit taken aback by the Angels performance. As we approached the first 10 minutes of the game Coundon pushed the game back into the Angels half to gain a corner from which they scored against the run of play. The Angels continued to push, and about 14 minutes in Ella came really close, and some slick passing followed this between Beth and Tyler. Then 24 minutes in Charlotte hit an absolute cracker, but the Coundon goalie blocked it, and Beth could not get to the rebound. Once again Coundon came back at us to pop the ball into our net from a sideline in swinger. Tyler and Beth combined to produce a shot at goal, but the Coundon goalie stopped it. Then as we approached 37 minutes of the game, Jess who had been well and truly shut down by Coundon for most of the game broke free and produced a Jess classic – a great long lob over the head of the Coundon goalie to bring the half time score to Coundon 2, Angels 1.

In the second half Coundon really came at us, with Molly in particular, aided by Aley, and Millsey producing some brilliant defence play. The Angels came back at Coundon, and so the match went on with both sides putting the other under pressure. Then some 17 minutes into this second half Coundon were doing battle right by our goal, and they somehow trickled the ball past our goalie with one of the weakest goals I have seen. This seemed to lift Coundon, and the Angels despite some great passes, and ball play, interspaced by some odd wild kicking were put under real pressure by Coundon. Molly and the rest of the defence aided on numerous occasions by Charlotte, who was everywhere on the pitch from deep defence to midfield, and then a striker, but even so Coundon managed to hit our crossbar twice in the 27th minute, and again came so very close to scoring in the dying minutes of the game. The final score was Coundon 3, Angels 1.

Despite this defeat, a bit of a blow since we never lost one single match last season, the Angels should be proud of their performance remembering that they are playing in the Premier League, and most of them a year above their age group.

Angels of the Match, Molly for brilliant defence play, Beth for some outstanding tackles and play, and Charlotte for covering the pitch so well.

Saturday 1st September:
Leafield Athletic 3 v 4 Angels
Today’s evening match was a friendly away against Leafield Athletic. Leafield are playing in the under 15’ Premier Division of the Central Warwickshire League. Remembering that almost all of our team are in the under 14’s age group it was decided to give the girls a challenge by playing in the under 15’s Division One of the Central Warwickshire League for the 2011/2012 season.

We have several new girls for this season, so the match against Leafield was very much a trial to see how the girls gelled, and played together for their first competitive match.

During the first half the Angels were feeling each other out, and we were a bit shaky in places, with some fairly wild passes at times, but the girls did play well, and showed a lot of promise for the future. At half time the Angels were 3 – 1 down.

In the second half the Angels all came out with their heads held high. The Angels passing, and ball skills in the second half were much improved over the first half, and you could almost feel the team beginning to gel, with some slick passing, and winning the ball with some really strong play. Our strong defence, midfield, and forward play was soon rewarded to take the score line to 3 – 3. I would have liked to hear the Angels shouting for the ball a bit more, but as the team were new to each other this will come. Well into the second half the Angels took the score to 3 – 4 to win the match.

Towards the end of the match the Angels, both new and old players, were playing like a team that had played together for at least a full season.

Leafield was certainly not a pushover, and their strong play produced one of the best matches the Angels have had in a long time, and it certainly caused the Angels to raise their game. This was a truly entertaining, and enjoyable game for both players, and spectators alike. I am not going to name any of the Angels, and goal scorers, but I am going to say that as Manager I am proud of each and every player.

Much to my surprise after the Leafield match, the following notice appeared on the Central Warwickshire League Web Site.

IMPORTANT FOR UNDER 15’s. There will be change to the divisions; Warwick Junior Angels will be placed in the Premier Division.

This has got to be a first – to have my young team promoted from Division One to the Premier Division without playing a single league match.

Saturday 10th September
 Angels 4 v 0 Alvechurch lions

Today’s home match against Alvechurch Lions was our first official match in the under 15’s premier league. Last week Alvechurch were beaten 16 – 0 by Wolves girls in their first match of the season, but to put this into perspective Alvechurch Lions had only 8 players on the pitch for the first half, and only 7 for the second half.

For today’s match they had 10 players. I am not sure how to describe the Angels play today. It was a bit like trying to light a garden bonfire, which never really bursts into full flame. There were times when the Angels passing and ball play was on a par with top flight men’s English premier league play – decisive and deadly accurate, but these incidents were few and far between, and if you couple that to the fact several of our key players played well below what we know they can do, then I think this sums up the match. The long ball from Alvechurch, particularly from goal kicks exposed our defence time and time again as they miss- judged the bounce.

In the first half 3 minutes in Tyler came close with a header, and this was followed by a cracking cross from Rhyan, only to see Beth miss the chance. Then 5 minutes in Tyler popped the ball up Beth to see her take a good goal. Some 9 minutes in the Jess hit the post, and then Charlotte came close. 11 minutes in Alvechurch broke through our defence, but their shot was wide and high. Shortly after this Beth had a good shot at goal, but the Alvechurch goalie did really well to stop it. Chloe then had a good try following a corner. Some 20 minutes in Jess took a free kick, but the Alvechurch goalie stopped it easily. A couple of minutes later Jess produced a fantastic pass to Tyler to see her score a great goal. Once more Alvechurch came close, but then some 28 minutes in the Angels gained a corner. As the ball came out from this Jess thumped the ball into the net. This was followed by Jess, and Tyler coming close, and in the dying minutes of the first half Charlotte had a long cracking shot, which came so close. So, at the end of the first half the score was Angels 3, Alvechurch 0.

At the start of the second half Alvechurch put us under a bit of pressure to gain a corner, which Charlotte and Zoe did well to clear between them. Well into this second half Jess cracked home a great shot, then Ellie produced a great cross to Tyler, but her header missed. Then Charlotte got in a good cross to Tyler, but again the shot missed. Some 27 minutes into this half Alvechurch split our defence, and came close. Molly then broke free, and came really close to hit the side netting. Both Ellie, and Ella did some great work down the wing, producing some good passes / crosses. Once more Alvechurch broke through, and had it not been for Tyler clearing off our goal line the Alvechurch ball was heading for our net. Both Rhyan, and Beth then came close, but at full time the score was Angels 4, Alvechurch 0. Certainly the second half was flat, and the Angels seemed to lack drive. A good first result, and Zara in our goal had little to do, but The Angels will need to raise their game for future fixtures.
